In 1926, the Juilliard School of Music was created through a merger of the Institute of Musical Art and the Juilliard Graduate School. 52nd Street, and established the Juilliard Graduate School. In 1920, the Juilliard Foundation was created, named after textile merchant Augustus D. It moved in 1910 to 120 Claremont Avenue in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, onto a property purchased from Bloomingdale Insane Asylum near the Columbia University campus. The Institute of Musical Art opened in the former Lenox Mansion, Fifth Avenue and 12th Street, on October 11, 1905. In 1968, the school's name was changed from the Juilliard School of Music to The Juilliard School to reflect its broadened mission to educate musicians, directors, and actors. In 1919, a wealthy textile merchant named Augustus Juilliard died and left the school in his will the largest single bequest for the advancement of music at that time. The Hollywood Reporter looked at notable movies and TV credits that our graduates have appeared in. The season included the first public performances by NIDA's second-year Acting students in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (or What You Will) and Peter Weiss's Marat/Sade in their first public production. In 2019, the 60th Anniversary Season featured a stellar array of guest artists, including award-winning Australian actor and director Judy Davis as guest director, theatre director Kim Hardwick creating a new Australian stage musical, an Australian premiere written and directed by Michael Gow, and award-winning screenwriter/director Jim Sharman. Iconic Australian actor Sigrid Thornton and NIDA alumnus and Sydney Theatre Company Artistic Director, Kip Williams have been appointed to NIDA’s Board of Directors to help shape the future of the institute. These include Director of Acting, John Bashford, the former Head of Acting and Vice Principal at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). The stringent ranking took into account management and staff, guest mentors and visiting artists, recent graduates notable film, TV and theatre credits, and buildings and facilities.įor The Hollywood Reporter, NIDA was proud to list its achievements. The Hollywood Reporter canvassed alumni, instructors and top theatre and Hollywood pros to arrive at its list. The Reporter’s international ranking of acting schools places NIDA in the top echelons, along with Carnegie Mellon and New York’s Juilliard School.
